NEW Massachusetts Oil Heating System Upgrade and Insurance Law

May 25th, 2010 3:34 PM by Christopher Terry

If you're a Massachusetts homeowner and your property is heated using home heating oil as a fuel source you may be impacted by this new law. These new compliance rules are designed to eliminate the oil leaks that have plaqued numerous homes where the fuel line that leaves the oil tank is buried in concrete and then reappears at the burner.

In some instances, the buried portion of the line leaks, causing expensive environmental damage. Since this damaged area is buried, this condition can continue for many years before being detected. In addition, the new law requires homeowner insurance companies to make available coverage, at an additional cost, for oil spills to all homes that are in compliance with the new rules. The law goes into effect July 1, 2010.
